At CMHA York Region South Simcoe, we stand with those who identify as autistic and their families. We know that careless rhetoric and misinformation about autism causes real harm, adding to stigma that already impacts mental health and well-being.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a wide range of conditions related to brain development and is influenced by many genetic and environmental factors. Scientific evidence has not shown that medications like acetaminophen, when used occasionally during pregnancy under medical guidance, cause autism. Suggesting otherwise risks fuelling fear, shame, and blame.
As a community mental health organization, we support the work of researchers and health professionals who continue to deepen our understanding of autism. Our role is to ensure individuals and families have access to accurate information, compassionate care, and a supportive community. At CMHA York and South Simcoe, our programs such as our Community Connections Neurodiversity Affirming Support Group, provide a safe and welcoming space for individuals to receive mental health care that honours and acknowledges their unique identities.
Autism is not something to be explained by a single cause. It is a spectrum of differences that deserves respect, acceptance, and inclusion. We remain committed to challenging stigma, uplifting families, and creating spaces where autistic people are valued for who they are.
