Position Title:            Program Volunteer – Recreational Group/Workshop Volunteer

Purpose:                    To assist in the Community Connections Programs

As the nation-wide leader and champion for mental health, CMHA facilitates access to the resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness.


This group meets regularly and is facilitated by one of our volunteers.  It assists people in reducing isolation and restoring confidence. The program supports members to develop recovery-oriented skills including arts and crafts, relaxation, creative expression, self-care, recreation as well as promoting social engagement.


  • To adhere to CMHA’s written volunteer policies and procedures
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to information about clients, family members and others
  • Inform supervisor immediately of concerns regarding the welfare of clients
  • Inform supervisor of issues that might interfere with the running of the program.
  • Inform supervisor of issues that might interfere with volunteer placement or performance of volunteer role
  • Keep members aware of program changes
  • Be aware of health and safety procedures
  • Bring questions to staff as they arise
  • Make people feel welcome and comfortable
  • Assist program staff with activities and programming
  • Develop, support, and/or deliver groups as per unique skills and experience
  • Provide orientation to new member
  • Contribute to the development of the agency/program
  • Be aware of health and safety procedures

  • Ability to work with limited supervision following orientation

  • Programs are offered Tuesday through Friday in Aurora between 9:30am-3:30pm
  • Programs are offered Tuesday, Thursday, Friday in Markham between10:30am-3:30pm.
  • A minimum commitment of 6-months volunteering 2 hours weekly or bi-weekly on a day/time as agreed to with staff supervisor.
  • Completion of general orientation and on-the-job training; to be arranged with Supervisor
  • Monthly Activity Forms identifying volunteer hours will be completed and submitted to the supervisor for signature at the end of each month
  • Attend relevant meetings as needed (including site meetings, staff supervision, etc.)
  • Attend volunteer schedule as agreed with staff supervisor
