MISSION STATEMENT OF AGENCY

As a nation-wide, voluntary organization, the Canadian Mental Health Association promotes the mental health of all and supports the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness.

 

PURPOSE

To assist in the Community Connections Vaughan Social Circle Program

 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This group meets every Wednesday 1:00pm-3:00pm in Vaughan at the Mens Sana program. The social circle is run by 2 Occupational Therapists and is a joint program of Community Connections and the Southwest ACTT team. The program supports members to develop recovery-oriented skills including cooking, relaxation, creative expression, self-care, recreation as well as promoting social engagement.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • To adhere to CMHA’s written volunteer policies and procedures
  • Maintains confidentiality with respect to information about clients, family members and others
  • Greet members as they arrive, make sure that they sign in
  • Keep members aware of program changes
  • Make people feel welcome and comfortable
  • Assist program staff with activities and programming
  • Provide orientation to new members
  • Assist staff with developing, supporting, and/or delivering activities as per unique skills and experience
  • Contribute to the development of the agency/program
  • Bring questions to staff as they arise
  • Responsibility for informing supervisor when supplies are needed
  • Be aware of health and safety procedures
  • Inform supervisor immediately of concerns regarding the welfare of clients
  • Inform supervisor of issues that might interfere with the running of the program
  • Inform supervisor of issues that might interfere with volunteer placement or performance of volunteer role

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good organizational & time management skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision following orientation
  • Willingness to assist clients & staff of program
  • Works well with others and enjoys helping when needed
  • Easily adapts to changing environments
  • Respectful, compassionate
  • Knowledgeable and resourceful
  • Some experience leading a group an asset
  • Skills in cooking are an asset

 

COMMITMENT

  • Completion of general orientation and on-the-job training; to be arranged with Supervisor
  • Commit to attending group weekly on Wednesdays between 12:45pm-3:15pm
  • Attend program’s team meeting as needed
  • Attend volunteer schedule as agreed with program manager
  • Complete a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Monthly Activity Forms identifying volunteer hours will be completed and submitted to the supervisor for signature at the end of each month
  • A minimum of 6 month commitment
