For people with unipolar treatment resistant depression
Depression and anxiety-related disorders are common. While many people improve with medication or psychotherapy, some do not. Access to repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is now available for adults across Ontario with treatment-resistant depression, free of cost.

What is rTMS?
rTMS is a safe, effective, evidence-based and non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted areas of the brain, used for people whose depression has not improved with medication or psychotherapy. Learn more about rTMS with Oak Valley Health’s brochure.
rTMS is a non-surgical treatment with no anesthesia required—you remain awake and comfortable. It is performed as outpatient procedure and there is no lost productivity hours post-procedure.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is available via referral, to individuals with depression where medication and/or psychotherapy has not improved symptoms. There are some situations where rTMS may not be recommended:
• Certain medical conditions, specific medications, or metal implants in or near the head
• Individuals with a history of certain neurological conditions, such as seizures
Your health care provider will discuss with you to determine whether rTMS is safe and appropriate for you.
How do individuals access service?
Individuals are required to receive a referral by a physician, nurse practitioner, or psychiatrist. One course of treatment is 30 sessions (five days/week for six weeks).
What does service look like?
You will sit comfortably in a treatment chair, and a small magnetic coil is placed gently on your scalp. The device delivers targeted magnetic pulses to the areas of your brain involved in mood regulation. Depending on the treatment protocol, each session is less than 20 minutes, five days/week for six weeks. Most people can return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

This rTMS program is covered by the Province of Ontario.
