01 May Sick of Waiting: Get Loud for Mental Health

Get ready to use your outside voice, because we’re about to GET LOUD for mental health! May 1 – 7 marks the 66th Annual CMHA Mental Health Week, and this year we’re getting loud because Canadians are sick of waiting.
What are they waiting for? The list is as long as the lines they’re in. They’re sick of waiting a year or more for access to a mental health professional. Thousands of children are waiting upwards of a year to get the mental health treatment they need now.
And while the wait for mental health treatment is distressingly long, doctors and medications can only take us so far. To create mentally health communities, Canadians need adequate housing, employment, psychologically safe workplaces, and financial security. They need counselling and psychotherapy, community-based interventions and social supports that aren’t funded. Children need school curriculum and school supports that can help prevent mental illness. This kind of mental health promotion and illness prevention can help prevent Canadians from ending up in Emergency Departments and hospital beds.
Canadians have also been waiting for the stigma and discrimination to end. Although most Canadians say they are more aware of mental health issues than 5 years ago, the stigma related to mental illnesses continues. Sixty per cent of Canadians do not seek help for fear of being labeled.

This year marks the 66th CMHA Mental Health Week. Now a Canadian tradition, CMHA Mental Health Week was first introduced in 1951 to raise mental health awareness. During CMHA Mental Health Week, we encourage all Canadians to reflect on their own attitudes and take action for increased mental health. Building on last year’s successful “Get Loud for Mental Health” campaign, CMHA is once again asking Canadians to GET LOUD on social media and in their personal lives.
