Meet Sierra

Registered Practical Nurse, Assertive Community Treatment Team (SS)

Sierra’s advice and inspiration for others

One of the most powerful pieces of advice that has been given to me and that I can offer is to embrace the journey of continuous growth, change and learning. In a world that often prioritizes instant results and quick fixes, it’s easy to become discouraged by setbacks or feel overwhelmed by change. However, viewing life as a series of opportunities, and trying to see a positive within each opportunity can shift your perspective and open doors you once thought never to be possible.

Growth is rarely linear. There will be ups and downs, moments of clarity, and periods of confusion. Instead of viewing challenges as failures, try to see them as valuable learning experiences. Each obstacle you encounter can teach you something about yourself, your resilience and your ability to adapt.

Additionally, surround yourself with a diverse network of people who inspire and challenge you. Engage in conversations with those who think differently and be willing to listen and learn from their experiences.

Setting realistic goals is another crucial component of growth. Break down your objectives into manageable steps and celebrate small victories along the way to help you maintain a positive outlook.

Lastly, practice self-compassion. It’s easy to be your own toughest critic, especially when things don’t go as planned. I have learned over the past year to allow yourself the grace to be imperfect and acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes. By treating yourself with compassion and kindness, the way that you would care for someone you love, you’ll be better equipped to tackle challenges with resilience and determination.

Embrace the twists and turns, stay curious, build meaningful connections, set achievable goals and practice self-compassion.

Sierra’s most rewarding accomplishment at CMHA

I supported my team in securing housing for a client who had never lived independently before. This particular individual had faced numerous challenges throughout their life, and the idea of living on their own felt daunting, but was a goal they wished to achieve.

After working closely together, we navigated various resources and support systems to find a suitable place. The day we received the confirmation of the housing was incredibly emotional. I could see the mix of excitement and apprehension in their eyes, and it was a moment of profound joy for the client, the team and myself.

Seeing this client take their first steps into their new home was unforgettable. It was more than just securing a roof over their head; it represented newfound independence, hope and the possibility of a brighter future. This accomplishment reaffirmed why I am passionate about my work—helping individuals reclaim their lives and build a sense of belonging in their communities. It was a true testament to the power of support and perseverance.

Why Sierra enjoys working at CMHA

I am deeply passionate about promoting mental health and supporting individuals in their journey toward recovery and independence. CMHA’s commitment to reducing stigma, constantly advocating for mental health awareness and providing accessible resources aligns perfectly with my values.

Working here allows me to make a tangible difference in people’s lives. I appreciate the holistic approach CMHA takes, addressing not only mental health but also the social determinants that impact well-being. The collaborative and compassionate environment fosters personal and professional growth, encouraging staff to learn from one another and share best practices.

On a daily basis, I am inspired by the resilience of our clients and the transformative power of community support. When I witness individuals taking significant steps toward their goals it reinforces my commitment to this work. CMHA not only empowers those we serve but we also cultivate a strong sense of community among staff, making it overall a fulfilling place to work. It’s rewarding to be part of an organization that truly cares about the mental health and well-being of everyone it serves.

How the Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT) supports our community

The Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT) has a profound impact on the community by providing client-centered support for individuals with severe mental health issues. With ongoing support and intervention, ACTT helps reduce the need for hospitalization, leading to the client getting well outside of the hospital walls. This means less strain on healthcare resources and more stable community living for clients.

ACTTs interdisciplinary approach lends to holistic support, addressing not only mental health needs but also housing, employment, peer and social support. This holistic care model helps clients achieve stability and improve their overall quality of life.

Lastly, empowerment is a key in the work that we do. The team works collaboratively with clients to set personal goals and develop skills for independent living, promoting self-determination and empowerment.

Overall, ACTT not only supports individuals but also strengthens the fabric of the community by promoting mental wellness and reducing stigma.
