In honour of National Social Work Month, we decided to share the profiles of some of the great Social Workers that make up the awesome team here at CMHA-YRSS. Meet Kusumam, a Social Worker in our Assertive Community Transitions Team.
Kusumam
1. Why did you decide to become a Social Worker?
The social work profession gives me the opportunity to care for others within a professional and evidence-based framework. Being there for our clients, as an active listener, makes them feel accepted and empowered.
2. What do you love most about being a Social Worker?
It is amazing to practice social work, as the profession carries with it such a respect for individuals. Social Workers believe in the inherent worth and dignity of all, as well as an acceptance of individuals for who they are. These values have guided me throughout three decades of my professional social work practice.
3. What does a day at work look like for you?
Being a part of ACTT Team, my work day can be quite hectic as we support clients who have serious mental health concerns. We need to be alert always, especially during this lockdown period to ensure the health, safety and wellness of our clients.
4. Why do you think that Social Work Week is important?
It is great to have a week for Social Workers to celebrate success and reflect on their contributions to society.
