Social Work Month: Nisha

In honour of National Social Work Month, we decided to share the profiles of some of the great Social Workers that make up the awesome team here at CMHA-YRSS. First up is Nisha, a Social Worker in our Flexible Support Program.

1. Why did you decide to become a Social Worker?

I remember doing the test in my grade 10 career studies class and social work was the first profession that came up for me. I then explored social work further and decided it was the path for me. I liked the idea that I could make a difference in the world and work with individuals who need support. This field is an extension of who I am and I definitely feel like I ended up where I was supposed to. This profession gives my life meaning.

2. What do you love most about being a Social Worker?

I love the fact that I get to support others on their healing journey and witness their growth, resiliency and strength. There are also a number of diverse settings and populations that a social worker can work in and I’ve had the privilege of exploring many of them. I was quickly able to learn how significant and valuable social workers are.

3. What does a day at work look like for you?

My day consists of multiple counselling sessions as well as facilitating psychoeducational/recreational groups for residents in group homes. In addition, to the  sessions and groups, my day also includes team meetings and/or meetings with colleagues and community partners. Moreover, let’s not forget the documentation.

4. Why do you think that Social Work Month is important?

I’m really grateful that we have a week dedicated to our profession, because social work is often an undervalued helping profession. It is important to educate people about what social workers do and recognize their valuable contributions.
