Social Work Week And Month: Nisha

March is National Social Work Month, with Social Work Week running from March 1st through 7th. In honour of these events, we decided to share profiles of some of the great Social Workers that make up the awesome team here at CMHA York Region and South Simcoe. Enjoy!


1. Why did you decide to become a Social Worker?

I remember doing the test in my grade 10 career studies class and social work was the first profession that came up for me. I then explored social work further and decided it was the path for me. I liked the idea that I could make a difference in the world and work with individuals who need support. This field is an extension of who I am and I definitely feel like I ended up where I was supposed to. This profession gives my life meaning.

2. What do you love most about being a Social Worker?

I love the fact that I get to support others on their healing journey and witness their growth, resiliency and strength. There are also a number of diverse settings and populations that a social worker can work in and I’ve had the privilege of exploring many of them. I was quickly able to learn how significant and valuable social workers are.

3. What does a day at work look like for you?

My day consists of multiple counselling sessions as well as facilitating psychoeducational/recreational groups for residents in group homes. In addition, to the  sessions and groups, my day also includes team meetings and/or meetings with colleagues and community partners. Moreover, let’s not forget the documentation 😊.

4. Why do you think that Social Work Week and Month is important?

I’m really grateful that we have a week dedicated to our profession, because social work is often an undervalued helping profession. It is important to educate people about what social workers do and recognize their valuable contributions.

5. How has social work changed with COVID-19?

COVID-19 has allowed the profession to come up with innovative ways of connecting with clients and colleagues virtually/over the phone. Some of the advantages of this has been that supports and services are more accessible for those who are comfortable using technology and have issues finding transportation. We have definitely found a new way of connecting with clients and I hope this option will remain post-pandemic. It has allowed a work-life balance for many of us as well.

However, some of the challenges have been that it’s difficult for people to access support if they are not comfortable using technology and/or prefer meeting in-person. We know that face-to-face social interactions/human connection can enhance health and that’s definitely missing right now.
